Introduction

Classification of Zodiac signs into fixed, movable and dual is a very primary classification of signs, however how many of us can think of the reason why zodiac signs are classified as Movable, fixed and dual and what can they predict about the physical and emotional characteristics of a person.

What is moving, fixed and dual in signs ☀️

The thing that is moving in Movable, fixed and dual sign is the primary source of energy that is “Sun” ☀️. Let us understand this with the Hindu Panchang and what they tell about the movement of the Sun.

The Naming of the month 🗓️

Movable Signs: The Energy of Change 🌊

Movable Signs are those signs where Sun is moving from one direction to another.

For example- Aries ♈, Cancer ♋, Libra ♎ and Capricorn ♑ ( 1-4-7-10) are movable signs

Let us again look at table of months-

  • The month during which the Sun moves from Pisces ♓ to Aries ♈(movable sign) or when Mesh Sankranti happens is Vaisakh (Vaishakha). During this month Sun achieves its exaltation point. It is a change of season and this movement of Sun Indicates Onset of Summers.
  • In the movable signs 1-4-7-10 Sun is changing the seasons and primary energy available to earth.
  • During Kark Sankranti( 4) ♋ in the month of Shravan (Shravana), Sun change course to Dakshinayan
  • During Tula sankranti ( 7) ♎  in the month of Kartik (Kartika), sun achieves its lowest point and indicate onset of winters
  • During Makar Sankranti ( 10) ♑ in the month of Maagh (Magha), Sun change course to Uttarayan and end of winters
April: Mesha Sankranti (Sun enters Aries ♈) वैशाख (Vaishakha) (1)
July: Karka Sankranti (Sun enters Cancer ♋) श्रावण (Shravana) ( 4)
October: Tula Sankranti (Sun enters Libra ♎) कार्तिक (Kartika) (7)
January: Makar Sankranti (Sun enters Capricorn ♑) माघ (Magha) (10)

What are Fixed Signs 🏔️

Fixed Signs 2-5-8-11 are those signs where Sun is not changing direction or changing quality of energy available hence these are fixed signs

May: Vrishabha Sankranti (Sun enters Taurus ♉) ज्येष्ठ (Jyeshtha) (2)
August: Simha Sankranti (Sun enters Leo ♌) भाद्रपद (Bhadrapada) (5)
November: Vrishchika Sankranti (Sun enters Scorpio ♏) मार्गशीर्ष (Margashirsha) (8)
February: Kumbha Sankranti (Sun enters Aquarius ♒) फाल्गुन (Phalguna) (11)

What are dual signs ⚖️

Dual Signs (3-6-9-12) are those sign where the first part is continuing with the same energy from the previous fixed sign but the end part is changing energy and seasons like movable signs hence they show dual effect in a Rashi.

June: Mithuna Sankranti (Sun enters Gemini ♊) आषाढ़ (Ashadha) (3)
September: Kanya Sankranti (Sun enters Virgo ♍) आश्विन (Ashwina) (6)
December: Dhanu Sankranti (Sun enters Sagittarius ♐) पौष (Pausha) ( 9)
March: Meena Sankranti (Sun enters Pisces ♓) चैत्र (Chaitra) ( 12)

Summary

Change of energy like Moving( 1-4-7-10) 🌊 or stable( 2-5-8-11) 🏔️ or preparing for change( dual) ⚖️ impact both the physical and emotional state of an Individual and a quick look and the Panchang can tell us if the native has Kinetic energy( moving), Potential energy ( static) or a mix of both.
